Faculty

The lecturing staff of the Program is selected to meet all the teaching and learning objectives of the Program both in the context of lecturers but also as supervisors for theses. The curriculum is taught by highly regarded senior staff members, all of whom have substantial research and teaching experience. Many of the staff is also independent practitioners in their own right, thus keeping in touch with current developments and application issues. The course coordinators will select their instructors in line with the afore-mentioned requirements. The course coordinators are:

 

Prof. dr. Stefaan Van den Bogaert

Stefaan Van den Bogaert (1973) is Professor in European law and Director of the Europa Institute at Leiden Law School, the Netherlands. Van den Bogaert is also visiting Professor in European Sports Law at the University of Brussels (VUB), Belgium. He is fellow at the Graduate School of legal studies at Leiden Law School, member of the Ius Commune Research School and member of the editorial committee of the Maastricht Journal of European and Comparative Law. 

Van den Bogaert graduated from the Faculty of Law at the Catholic University of Leuven. He also studied at the University of Osnabrück (Erasmus Program ‘Social Security in Europe’). He holds an LLM from the University of Cambridge (LLM in European and Commercial Law, first class) and obtained a PhD in Law (2003) at the European University Institute in Florence with a thesis on the regulation of the mobility of sportsmen in the European Union in the post-Bosman era. During his studies, Van den Bogaert received a grant from the European Cambridge Trust and won the Jennings Prize of Wolfson College for the best LLM student. He also got the Best Written Pleading Award in the European Moot Court Competition in 1999. He was nominated for the University Education prize at Maastricht University in 2005. In 2006, he was awarded the Hustinx Stipend at Maastricht University for Outstanding Young Scholarship.

Van den Bogaert worked as research assistant at the Institute of Social Law of the Catholic University of Leuven (1996-97) and at the European University Institute (2000). He was a trainee at the Sports Unit of DG Education and Culture of the European Commission (2000-01). Between 2003 and 2009, he worked at Maastricht University, initially as lecturer and from 2007 as senior lecturer in European law. His main research interests are EU internal market law, EU competition law, EU institutional law and sport.

 

Mr. Arjo van Eijsden

Arjo van Eijsden holds LLM degrees in Civil Law and Tax Law (Erasmus University Rotterdam, 1997). His Master Thesis on the taxation of hybrid entities in cross-border situations was awarded the annual ‘NOB/LOF-scriptieprijs’. Arjo is a tax partner at Ernst & Young in the Netherlands where he leads the Tax Controversy Group. He also leads the Netherlands-Belgium Tax Controversy Group and heads E&Y’s Netherlands Tax Opinion Board. Arjo has published on various tax law topics, particularly in the field of EU procedural law. He is a regular speaker at international conferences.

 

Prof. dr. Frank Engelen

Frank Engelen is professor of International and EU tax law at Leiden Law School and fellow of the International Tax Center Leiden. He is also a Tax Partner and Member of the Board of Management at PwC Netherlands and a substitute Judge at the Court of Appeals of The Hague. Frank graduated in tax law from the Erasmus University Rotterdam in 1996, where he received a doctorate in law (dissertation: Interpretation of tax treaties under international law) in 2004. In 2005, he was appointed as a Professor at Leiden University (inaugural lecture: On values and norms. The principle of good faith in the law of treaties and the law of tax treaties in particular). He has authored and co-authored several books and numerous articles on international and European taxation issues. He is a member of the Netherlands Association of Tax Advisors (Nederlandse Orde van Belastingadviseurs), the Association for Tax Research (Vereniging voor Belastingwetenschap), the International Fiscal Association and the European Association of Tax Law Professors. At PwC, Frank advises Dutch multinationals on corporate income tax, EU law and tax treaties. On several occasions, Frank has served as an expert witness in international tax matters.

 

Prof. dr. René van der Paardt

René van der Paardt (1952) a Professor in sales taxes at the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is a member of the IFA and the Association of Real Estate Advisors and has written many articles on VAT and real estate transfer tax. A former partner, René is currently of counsel to Loyens & Loeff in the Netherlands. He is a member of the VAT, Customs and International trade practice group at Loyens & Loeff. He advises various banks, insurance companies, pension funds, property funds, property developers, municipalities and housing corporations on VAT and real estate transfer tax. He is also a VAT consultant to several importing and exporting companies.
